One of the most popular questions surrounding artificial grass is of course “how is artificial grass installed”? And the immediate answer to that question would be that it depends on the company or individual who is installing it.

Artificial grass can have different installation procedures based on the preference and knowledge of the individual. For example, if you’re installing artificial grass yourself (which we would not recommend unless you have experience with it) then you’re going to want to do this in the simplest, easiest way possible. Just remember that the method you use to install your artificial grass will most likely affect the quality of your artificial lawn. Now, let’s explain the correct and professional way to install artificial grass.

How We Install Artificial Grass

Here at K9 Turf, we have over 20 years’ experience in the artificial grass industry, and these are the steps we take during an artificial grass installation:

1. Ground base work. This involves the removal of any existing turf e.g. your natural grass that you are replacing, or it could even include the removal of concrete or decking. This step is taken to create a smooth, level plain that the artificial grass can lay on top of. In our opinion this is the most important step of the installation process, because if you lay artificial grass on an uneven surface this will be visible! An unlevel surface can result in dips, bumps and lines on your artificial lawn which is not going to give you the natural effect you desire. With a flat surface, we can now lay our crush and run stone and then grano on top and consolidate this using a wacker plate to create a strong and completely flat level plain.
2. Laying the grass. The grass can now be laid out over the perimeter of the area. This is then seamed together piece by piece using artificial grass glue and adhesive tape. We pin the artificial grass in multiple places to prevent it from parting; we use six inch galvanized nails ensuring the artificial grass is as secure as possible. For best results, we trim the edges of the artificial grass to the shape of your garden.
3. Zeolite Infill. Since we’re a pet friendly artificial grass company, we use our specialist infill which crystalizes pet urine and makes the artificial lawn safe for pets. You may wonder why pet urine would be an issue but this is because it contains ammonia and harmful bacteria which would linger on your lawn. We pour the infill all over the lawn evenly and use a mechanical brush to ensure everywhere is covered. We then hose the entire lawn to make sure the infill drops to the bed of the lawn so you are guaranteed a 100% pet friendly, fresh-smelling artificial lawn.
4. Enzyme cleaner. We use this deep cleaning product to control harmful bacteria found in pet urine as enzymes can break down bacteria with ease. This must always be used on a wet lawn so we use dosage guns attached to a hose pipe and leave the cleaner on for 10-15 minutes. Once this time is up, we thoroughly hose the lawn or if heavy rainfall is on the way we let nature do this job.
